Civic Award

Each year, the Town Council makes an award to a citizen who has demonstrated outstanding service to the local Community.

The Town Council has awarded the Civic Award 2006 to Mrs Pat Goldsmith mainly to reflect her involvement with Change Ashby Now and with setting up and running "The Hub".

A special award was given to Madame Aimee Hannequin, the President of the Twinning Association in our twinned town of Pithiviers to reflect her work in promoting Ashby in her home town.

Town Centre Floral Display

The Town Council has agreed to initiate a scheme for hanging flower baskets to be displayed on business premises in the Town Centre.

Under the scheme, the Town Council will give grant aid to any business that wishes to participate and the hanging baskets will be supplied and watered throughout the summer months.

The joint venture will run for the next 2 years and it will be reviewed after that time.

The Town Council is also arranging for floral towers to be displayed within the Town Centre at the following sites :-

* Outside Boots/W H Smith
* Near Public Conveniences, Derby Road
* The Green

Bath Grounds Enhancements

The Town Council has completed a range of enhancement projects in the Bath Grounds. These improvements were conceived following extensive public consultation in 2001/2 and are set out in a report entitled "Ashby Bath Grounds Vision and Proposals" published by Ashmead Price, Landscape Architects in September 2004.

1) A landscaping scheme for the South Street entrance.
2) A street lighting scheme along the full length of the pathway.
3) Screen fencing to the rear of the Hastings Pavilion.
4) Pathway improvements in Hastings Garden.

Also, Ashby Hastings Rotary Club have generously erected bollards along the Station Road entrance roadway to curtail indiscriminate parking.

Further landscaping improvements in the Hastings Gardens are in hand.

Playground Equipment

The Town Council continues to seek ways to improve our existing playgrounds. The following developments have been approved.

a) Blackfordby.
We have earmarked £15000 for new equipment and an application for a further £15000 has been secured from Lottery Funds. A £30000 scheme will proceed shortly and local consultation has been carried out to determine preferences for equipment.

b) Hood Park
We have negotiated a substantial contribution from the Developers of a proposed housing development on the former Biscuit Factory site. This will enable us to carry out a substantial replacement of the Hood Park playground equipment. A scheme costing £140,000 will be completed in time for the start of the school summer holidays.

c) Western Park.
Again, we have agreed a contribution from Developers of the former Midland Garage site, which will be used to upgrade the play equipment at Western Park. Using Town Council funds to make up any shortfall, a scheme costing £40,000 will be started shortly.

Maintenance Standards for Recreation Areas

We have just agreed higher standards for maintaining our recreation grounds and open spaces.

Whilst we are confident that all our areas will be improved, please let us know about any areas that may be below standard.
